Ellens at Tilba, formerly known as Tilba Tea Pot, is a cozy café nestled on Bate Street in the heart of Central Tilba, a village rich with 19th-century timber architecture and a deep connection to the region’s gold rush history. This spot serves as a relaxed meeting place whether you’re passing through or settling in for a quiet break amid the historic surroundings.

Inside, the wood-paneled walls and timber floors give the café a warm and somewhat rustic charm that echoes the village’s character. The vibe is unpretentious and welcoming, with a small local crowd stopping by for a laid-back breakfast or lunch, often on cooler days when the indoor atmosphere feels especially comforting.

The menu leans toward hearty, handmade comfort food with a distinctly homemade feel. Regulars seem to appreciate simple classics with quality local ingredients — think breakfast loaves spread with jam, toasties featuring Tilba cheddar, and warming dishes like Panang Gai chicken curry or a pea and ham soup served with artisan bread. For those with a sweet tooth, lemon curd muffins and chocolate torte offer genuine homestyle treats rather than anything overly refined or fussy.

Coffee here is part of the daily local rhythm: flat whites and short blacks are standard fare, well-suited to the slow, easy pace preferred by visitors who value a break from the road or a calm pause in their day. The drink list also includes refreshing cold options like iced chocolate and ginger beer, providing choices beyond just the usual espresso bar offerings.

Service is noted as friendly and warm, even when the team is managing busy periods with fewer hands on deck. This creates a slightly unhurried tempo, which many diners find adds to the experience—part of the charm of a small village café where staff know the regulars and make an effort despite limited resources.

Best times to visit might be mid-morning or early afternoon, especially on chilly or rainy days when the cozy interior provides shelter and a comforting meal. Those who appreciate a slow breakfast or a casual lunch in a small town steeped in history will find Ellens at Tilba fits the bill. It’s the sort of place where locals and travelers alike can feel at home without pretense, drawn by good food, familiar flavors, and a relaxed pace set to the rhythm of Central Tilba’s historic streets.

Here we are on a wet, dour cold August day, and sitting in a lovely wood panelled hous, timber floors, tucking into a mushroom risotto with baby spinach and walnuts, and a Rich roasted pumpkin soup with a crusty, freshly baked roll. This is a tasty treat in a historic timber village from the 1880s. Gold was discovered on Gulaga (named by Cptn Cook as mt dromedary) and the ensuing flood of prospectors led to Tilba Tilba. Anyway Ellen's also serves a freshly baked high scones with jam and cream. And plenty of warming black board specials. The risotto is freshly cooked with four types of mushrooms, and is finished with baby spinach and shaved parmesan. Grind a little pink salt over the top and it's taste plus. Drop by for a tasty special here. There's no gold however the service sparkles.

Excellent food and service, highly recommend the bacon and egg roll. Almost worth driving down to Tilba just for that!

Lovely location and environment , it truly felt like home. The meals were very homemade and the overall vibe was warm and welcoming. We ordered the Green Breakfast and the Big Breakfast, and both were great. The only thing to note is that there was only one lady taking orders and preparing the food, so it took a bit longer for our meals to be ready. Overall, a very nice experience and definitely worth visiting.

We were delighted to have lunch here today. Even though the ladies were understaffed we were greeted with friendly warm smiles and we're even offered table service. It was fantastic. Lunch was delicious and quick. We all really enjoyed our time there. Thank you all very much!

We had such a lovely time at Ellen’s Pantry! The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and you can feel the love in every detail. We enjoyed a couple of beautiful teas, a delicious frittata, and finished with a perfectly baked apple cake that was simply divine. Everything tasted fresh, wholesome, and made with genuine care. Ellen’s Pantry is more than just a place to eat—it’s a heartfelt experience. We can’t wait to come back!

Love these people. Visited them more than a year ago, so I tried visiting them again during our visit to Batemans Bay. They didn't disappoint. We were late, they almost were done, but just so that we weren't without food, they served us food and some free dessert on the house.
